AIZAWL: Mizoram has been grappling with severe shortages of fuel and essential commodities after several trucks and oil tankers got stranded on National Highway-306/06, the state’s lifeline, due to its deplorable condition.
The NH-306/06, particularly the Kawnpui-Khamrang sector in Kolasib district along the Assam-Mizoram border, is in a dilapidated state.
The Mizoram Oil Tanker Drivers’ Association (MOTDA) and the Petroleum Entrepreneurs’ and Transporters’ Union of Mizoram (PETUM) have announced a halt to all oil tanker operations in the state, effective Tuesday, September 17.
According to the MOTDA and PETUM the condition of the highways has deteriorated so badly that it has become dangerous for the oil tankers to transport fuel.
The organizations cited the hazardous road conditions as the primary reason for their decision, stating that several tankers have required repairs due to the poor infrastructure. This has led to increased transportation costs for petrol and diesel.
The prevailing situation has resulted in several tankers getting stranded on the highway which has led to shortages of fuel at the oil stations.
