Aizawl: Mizoram has joined the nationwide ‘Sugamya Yatra’ accessibility audit campaign, which seeks to identify and eliminate barriers preventing people with disabilities from accessing public spaces.
The initiative is part of the central government’s ‘Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan’ under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, aimed at promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities across the country.
Officials in Mizoram have begun assessing facilities in transport hubs, government offices, educational institutions, and hospitals.
On September 19, key locations such as Pachhunga University College, the Presbyterian Church of India at Republic Veng, and the Administrative Training Institute (MINECO) were inspected.
The inspection was carried out in collaboration with the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD).
The initiative seeks to ensure that wheelchair users, the visually impaired, and individuals with other disabilities can access essential facilities at public buildings, including government offices, educational institutions, and places of worship.
Through accessibility audits, the state aims to build a more disability-friendly environment. The initiative upholds the rights of persons with disabilities while ensuring that future development projects adhere to inclusive design principles.
The Sugamya Yatra accessibility audits focus on identifying challenges faced by people with mobility, hearing, or visual impairments when they use public infrastructure. These audits cover ramps, lifts, signage, toilets, transportation systems, and digital accessibility.
The ongoing audit covers seven districts of Mizoram, with teams working alongside persons with disabilities to assess infrastructure gaps and recommend improvements.

According to officials, the audits will also check compliance with national accessibility standards.
By involving disabled individuals directly in the evaluation process, the state aims to design a roadmap for creating barrier-free access.
