Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has condemned the killing of a student from Tripura in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, describing the incident as a case of alleged racial violence and stating that discrimination has no place in the country’s Constitution.
The chief minister said the killing of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma highlights the enduring discrimination and prejudice faced by people from the Northeast in certain parts of the country.
“Deeply saddened by the death of a student from Tripura in Dehradun. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. This tragedy highlights the continuing challenges faced by people from the Northeast in parts of mainland India,” Lalduhoma said in a post on X on Monday.
“Discrimination and racial prejudice have no place in our Constitution, and the rule of law must prevail to ensure justice,” he added.

Anjel Chakma, a resident of Machmara in Tripura’s Unakoti district, had gone to Dehradun after completing his graduation from Holy Cross School in Agartala to pursue an MBA. He was allegedly attacked by a group of youths in the presence of his younger brother, Michael, and succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after battling for life for 17 days. The attackers allegedly used knives and blunt objects.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Dehradun district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police (SSP) seeking a report on the alleged racially motivated killing of the student. The Commission has directed the Dehradun authorities to investigate the allegations and has sought an action taken report within seven days.
The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has also stepped up its demand for stringent action in the killing of Anjel Chakma, calling for capital punishment for those involved and stronger institutional safeguards against racial violence.
