Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday urged banks to significantly expand their presence in hilly and remote parts of the State, stressing that equitable access to financial services is critical for sustaining agriculture-led growth.
Addressing the State Credit Seminar 2026–27 organised by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in Aizawl, the chief minister said nearly 80 per cent of Mizoram’s population continues to depend on agriculture for livelihood, making rural credit and financial inclusion central to the State’s development strategy.
Pointing to the uneven distribution of banking facilities, Lalduhoma noted that of the State’s 278 bank branches, as many as 180 are concentrated in Aizawl, Lunglei and Kolasib districts, while the remaining eight districts together have only 95 branches.
He appealed to banks to correct this imbalance by strengthening outreach in underserved areas.
During the programme, the chief minister released the State Focus Paper 2026–27, which projects a total credit potential of Rs. 4,349.71 crore for priority sectors.
The largest share of Rs. 2,260.99 crore has been earmarked for agriculture and allied activities, followed by Rs. 1,500.35 crore for micro, small and medium enterprises.
Other allocations include housing (Rs. 432.35 crore), renewable energy (Rs. 24.67 crore), social infrastructure (Rs. 36.30 crore), education (Rs. 18.51 crore), export credit (Rs. 6.55 crore) and other sectors (Rs. 70 crore).
Highlighting NABARD’s role as a key development partner, Lalduhoma said several State initiatives have benefited from its support.
He informed that the 10 MW Thenzawl solar power project in Serchhip district, funded by NABARD, is nearing completion, while another 5 MW solar project is planned at Sumsuih in Aizawl district.

In the district-wise rankings for the Northeast, Hnahthial secured the top position, followed by Champhai, while Kolasib ranked ninth.
Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena delivered the keynote address, outlining the State government’s initiatives and achievements in collaboration with NABARD, and also flagged challenges going forward.
