Aizawl: The Central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (CYMA), Mizoram’s most prominent civil society group, has disbursed over Rs. 19 lakh in relief assistance to support both refugees from Myanmar and local residents affected by recent rain-induced disasters.

In a statement issued on Thursday, CYMA announced that Rs. 6 lakh was allocated to its branches in Champhai district to aid Myanmar nationals who fled into Mizoram following renewed ethnic conflict across the border.

Of this amount, Rs. 3 lakh was provided to the Zokhawthar branch, Rs. 2 lakh to Vaphai, and Rs. 1 lakh to the Champhai YMA sub-quarters.

According to official sources, over 4,000 people from Myanmar—displaced by violent clashes between anti-junta groups, the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) and Chinland Defence Force (CDF)—have taken refuge in Champhai district’s Zokhawthar and Vaphai villages.

While many found shelter with relatives, others were accommodated in community halls and supported with food and essentials by local NGOs and village authorities.

CYMA also distributed an additional Rs. 13 lakh on Thursday to assist Mizoram residents whose homes and livelihoods have been hit by severe weather events over recent weeks.

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) under the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, Mizoram recorded 846 landslides between May 24 and July 9, wreaking havoc across the state.

Infrastructure, mobility, and day-to-day activities have been significantly disrupted.

Aizawl district has emerged as the worst-affected, with 127 reported landslides and 22 homes destroyed, the SEOC noted.

The CYMA’s swift mobilisation of resources highlights the critical role played by local organisations in responding to both humanitarian crises and natural disasters in the state.
