Aizawl: BJP leader Molin Kumar Chakma, who was recently appointed Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram, successfully passed a floor test on Monday, solidifying his majority within the council.

The floor test, required to be held within 30 days of Chakma’s appointment, was initiated following a notification from the state’s District Council and Minority Affairs Department on January 31.

According to the official release, the confidence motion was extensively discussed in the House before being put to a vote.

During the session, the members expressed optimism for a stable executive committee under Chakma’s leadership, with a focus on the welfare of the people.

The opposition benches voiced their commitment to being a constructive force and promised to extend cooperation for policies that benefit the CADC’s people.

At the floor test, held at the council’s session hall in Kamalanagar, located in Lawngtlai district of southern Mizoram, 14 members voted in favor of the motion, while three voted against it. Two members were absent.

Chakma assumed office as CEM on February 4, following a prolonged political deadlock after the ousting of the Mizo National Front (MNF)-led council, which was headed by former CEM Rasik Mohan Chakma, through a no-confidence motion.

This marks the first time since the establishment of CADC in 1972 that the BJP has gained absolute majority control in the 20-member council.

The current council composition includes 13 BJP members, 6 from the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and just one member from the MNF.

The CADC, created in 1972 for the Chakma tribe, has now entered a new political phase with the BJP holding the reins.
