Aizawl: The Mizoram government is actively working to groom young sportspersons with the goal of enabling their participation in the 2036 Olympics, which India plans to host, Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar announced on Wednesday.

Speaking during the Question Hour in the Assembly, Hmar outlined the state’s efforts under the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) program, which is part of the flagship “Bana Kaih” (Handholding) scheme launched by Chief Minister Lalduhoma on January 15.

The programme focuses on providing basic coaching to children aged 8 to 15, identifying and nurturing talents for future competitions, including the Olympics.

“The EMS program is designed to tap into the potential of young sportspersons from across Mizoram, including those in remote villages,” Hmar said.

The initiative aims to establish a robust sports coaching and talent development framework to prepare athletes for global competitions.

The state government has allocated Rs. 2.5 crore for the program, which will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

This approach encourages community participation, ensuring shared responsibility and sustained commitment to the program’s goals.

“Our ultimate objective is to prepare Mizo youths, both men and women, to compete at the highest level on the global stage, particularly the 2036 Olympics,” the minister added.

The focus will be on sports disciplines where Mizoram athletes have the potential to excel and win medals.

The government is also negotiating with experts from other states to enhance the skills of local coaches and is taking steps to procure advanced sports materials and equipment to support the initiative.

Hmar emphasised the importance of long-term planning and investment in sports, expressing confidence that Mizoram’s efforts would contribute to India’s aspirations for Olympic success in 2036.
