Aizawl: Mizoram’s apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), has urged the state government to reconsider its decision to discontinue the publication of top-10 merit lists and student ranks in the result books of Classes 10 and 12.
The appeal comes a day after the Mizoram government announced that it would end the decades-old practice of publishing merit lists, distinctions and divisions in the result books at the time of declaring board examination results.
MZP general secretary C. Lalhmingsanga said the organisation’s executive committee meeting held detailed deliberations on the government’s decision and called for the move to be withdrawn.
According to him, the meeting urged the government to continue publishing merit lists, stating that they help promote healthy competition among students as well as schools.
Earlier on Tuesday, School Education Minister Vanlalthlana said that from this year onwards, the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) will declare the results of Classes 10 and 12 without awarding distinctions or divisions and without indicating the top-10 merit list in the result books. He said the policy change is aimed at ensuring quality education and discouraging students from focusing solely on ranks or high percentage marks.

MBSE chairman JH Zoremthanga, who accompanied the minister at the press conference, said the decision was taken to move away from the traditional emphasis on rote learning and to promote competency-based education for improved learning outcomes.
