Aizawl: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is getting ready to provide block-level and panchayat-level weather forecasts in Mizoram.
This was informed by IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Monday.
The IMD, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mizoram’s Directorate of Science and Technology (DST) in the presence of Chief Minister Lalduhoma and IMD chief Mohapatra.
As per the agreement, the IMD will provide meteorological data for climate study and weather services.
Mohapatra highlighted the importance of this MoU through “Mission Mausam” and the IMD’s future plans and services to the nation and Mizoram.
Under the MoU, the meteorological centre (state headquarters) would be set up at the Science Centre in Aizawl’s Berawtlang.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma said that it was the first MoU of the Mizoram government with any central agency.
He stated that the state government is pleased to support the IMD in expanding its services for the benefit of the state and its farmers.
Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, Director of IMD in Mizoram, highlighted the IMD services in various departments like Agriculture, Disaster Management, Irrigation and Water Resources, and Public Health Engineering of the Mizoram government.
K.N. Mohan, Additional Director General of IMD, briefed about meteorological instruments and technological supports and advancements in weather services of IMD.

During Monday’s meeting with the 16th Finance Commission in Aizawl, the chief minister requested special financial consideration for his state due to its challenging terrain, recurring natural disasters, and water scarcity.
