Aizawl: Mizoram observed Green Mizoram Day on Wednesday, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
This year’s theme, “Plant Trees and Catch the Rain,” underscored the critical link between afforestation, water conservation, and ecosystem resilience.
The main event took place in Thenzawl town, Serchhip district, where State Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga addressed attendees. Highlighting the indispensable role of trees in groundwater preservation, soil erosion prevention, and biodiversity sustenance, he urged citizens to actively participate in safeguarding Mizoram’s natural heritage.
Official programs were organized across district headquarters, accompanied by large-scale ceremonial tree plantation drives. Thousands of saplings were planted as part of the statewide initiative to mark the occasion.
Governor General (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh and his wife Bharti Singh participated in the celebrations by planting the state tree, Hershe, at Raj Bhavan.
Governor Singh emphasized the urgency of bolstering afforestation efforts in the face of the intensifying global climate crisis.
