The Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court has ordered M/s J Infratech Limited to complete repair works on critical stretches of the Aizawl–Silchar national highway by April 2026, underlining the urgency of restoring Mizoram’s main supply route ahead of the monsoon season.
The directive was issued by a Division Bench comprising Justice Marli Vankung and Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita while hearing a public interest litigation filed in 2025 by the Mizoram Truck Drivers Association (MTDA), which drew attention to the severely deteriorated condition of the highway.
The contractor is responsible for maintaining three key stretches — Bilkhawthlir to Kolasib, Kawnpui to Khamrang, and Buichali to Sairang — under a contract with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
These sections form Mizoram’s only dependable surface transport corridor for the movement of essential goods and commodities.
Although the company informed the court that 185 workers along with heavy machinery have been deployed at the project sites, the Bench observed that the mobilisation was inadequate given the scale and urgency of the work.
The court directed the firm to intensify operations and submit an affidavit detailing enhanced manpower and machinery deployment.
The Bench also ordered that visible progress be shown at the next hearing scheduled for March 11.
It reiterated that delays in restoring the highway have caused serious hardship to the public and financial losses to truck operators, and recalled its earlier warning that coercive steps, including the issuance of arrest warrants, could be taken in case of non-compliance with court directions.
