Aizawl: Financial fraud has dominated cybercrime in Mizoram, accounting for 56.38 percent of 321 cases registered between January 2020 and March 11, 2025, as per official data.
Out of 321 registered cybercrime incidents, 181 cases involved financial fraud, primarily online banking scams and cheating by impersonation, as reported by the state cybercrime police station.
Other notable cyber offences during the same period include identity theft, with 32 cases, child pornography (16), social media harassment (9), copyright infringement (7), false rumours (5), and hacking (1).
The highest number of financial crimes was reported in 2022 during which 107 cases were registered, the records said.
More than Rs 1.42 crore was recovered in financial fraud cases between 2021 and March 11, 2025.
As per the records, the state reported the highest number of cybercrimes in 2022, registering 158 cases, with a subsequent decrease to 72 cases in 2023.
In 2024, the number of cybercrime cases fell to 41, with 17 involving financial crimes and 15 related to sexual harassment.
In the current year till March 11, thirteen cybercrime cases were registered, of which six were related to sexual harassment and four to financial fraud.

The records stated that 113 people, including eight juveniles, were arrested in cybercrime cases and 40 of them were convicted, since 2021.
The prevalence of online financial fraud highlights the growing need for increased cybersecurity awareness and preventative measures within Mizoram.
