AIZAWL: Mizoram police, in a joint operation with the CID (SB) and Champhai DEF, seized a staggering 10 packets of suspected crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth, in the Melbuk area of east Mizoram’s Champhai district.
The haul, weighing a total of 10.385 kilograms, is estimated to be worth a staggering Rs 31.115 crore, according to local press quoting police sources.
The operation, initiated based on credible intelligence, led to the arrest of two individuals identified as Malsawmzuali (38) and Lalchhandama (19), both hailing from Lengpui village.
The duo was apprehended for possession of the contraband substance.
The seized crystal meth was swiftly confiscated under the provisions of the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, specifically under sections 22 (C)/29.
This significant interdiction underscores the mounting battle against drug trafficking in Mizoram, a region increasingly identified as a crucial transit route for narcotics.
Mizoram’s Director General of Police (DGP), Anil Shukla, had previously highlighted the state’s vulnerability to drug trafficking during a two-day training session on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act held on January 31.
During the session, DGP Shukla highlighted the pivotal role of vigilant law enforcement in securing new routes against the infiltration of illicit substances.
He urged all stakeholders to perceive their responsibilities not merely as obligations but as a dedicated commitment to safeguarding the well-being of the communities they serve.
“Waging war against drugs is a battle we cannot afford to lose,” stated DGP Shukla in a statement cited by a national daily.
As investigations in the seizure continue, authorities remain focused on unravelling the origin and intended destination of the seized crystal meth.
