AIZAWL: The Congress party has unveiled its complete list of candidates contesting all 40 assembly seats in Mizoram. While the names have been released, the official announcement will be made during an event at the party’s local office today, as informed by Congress state media chairman, Lalremruata Renthlei.
The announcement coincided with the arrival of former party chief, Rahul Gandhi, in Mizoram, as he commenced a two-day campaign visit on Monday. Initially, the party had made public the names of 39 candidates. Later in the evening, the Congress disclosed the candidature of Meiriam L Hrangchal for the Lunglei South (ST) constituency.
The list includes the names of four currently serving legislators. For the polls slated for November 7, the Congress has positioned Lalsanglura Ralte, a political novice, against the incumbent Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, for the Aizawl East-I seat – a seat Zoramthanga had previously secured in 2018.
Additionally, the party’s candidate list boasts several prominent names. Mizoram PCC chief, Lalsawta, will be contesting from the Aizawl West-III seat. He will be up against Zoram People’s Movement’s (ZPM) V L Zaithanzama and Mizo National Front’s (MNF) K Sawmvela. Senior party vice-president, Lal Thanzara, is set to compete from Aizawl North-III.
Congress state vice-president, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, has been slated for Aizawl North-I. Party treasurer, Lalmalsawma Nghaka, will contest from the Aizawl South-II seat, and Congress Legislature Party leader, Zodintluanga Ralte, will be vying for the Thorang constituency. Lastly, sitting MLA Lalrindika Ralte from Hachhek will face off against MNF’s Sports Minister, Robert Romawia Royte.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has indicated that they will soon announce their candidates. The reigning MNF and the ZPM have already declared their contenders, with both parties vying for all 40 assembly seats.
The much-anticipated counting of votes is set for December 3.
