Aizawl: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost control of Mizoram’s Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) on Monday after a no-confidence motion led to the removal of council leader Molin Kumar Chakma, marking a significant political shift.
The no-confidence motion, introduced by Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) member Doymoy Daveng Chakma, cited a loss of majority support for Molin Kumar Chakma’s executive committee.
During the special session convened by CADC Chairman Lakkhan Chakma, 15 of the 17 members present voted in favour of the motion, effectively ending BJP’s tenure in the council.
This development comes after 12 BJP members, including the chairman, defected to the ZPM, significantly altering the political landscape of the 20-member council.
Currently, the ZPM holds 16 seats, while the BJP retains two and the Mizo National Front (MNF) has one.
One seat remains vacant following the death of a BJP member in April.
The Molin Kumar Chakma-led executive committee, which came to power on February 4, was the BJP’s first administration in the CADC since its formation under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in 1972.
Its removal underscores the growing influence of the ZPM, which is now poised to stake its claim for forming the next executive committee.
The CADC, established for the welfare of the Chakma tribal community in Mizoram, is headquartered in Chawngte (Kamalangar) in the Lawngtlai district.

It holds legislative, executive, and judicial powers over designated departments within its jurisdiction.
The political reshuffle reflects the dynamic nature of the region’s politics, with the ZPM consolidating its presence in a council that has historically witnessed diverse political affiliations.
The official announcement of the new executive committee is awaited.
