KOHIMA: The Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR), Lt Gen PC Nair, has shed light on the Centre’s decision to abolish the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the India-Myanmar border areas, citing security reasons.
Speaking to the press during a wreath-laying ceremony commemorating the 33rd anniversary of Operation Dudhi, Lt Gen Nair acknowledged the potential opposition to the move but stressed the need to await the finer details before drawing conclusions.
“This is a decision that has been taken by the government, understandably for security reasons,” stated Lt Gen Nair, recognising the possibility of resistance from various quarters against the scrapping of FMR.
However, he highlighted that the specifics of the decision are yet to be revealed.
“Let the fine print come out and we will see what exactly is there in the details, and we will find ways to handle it,” he remarked, seeking to allay concerns about the perceived implications of the decision.
Meanwhile, in response to the Centre’s decision, the Zo Re-Unification Organisation (ZORO) has announced plans for a peaceful rally on May 16 at the Indo-Myanmar border.
The rally aims to protest against the fencing of the border and the abolition of the FMR.
The decision to organise the rally was made during a meeting at the ZORO general headquarters in Treasury Square, chaired by R Sangkawia, President of ZORO.
Discussions during the meeting centred on the ramifications of fencing the border, with members vehemently opposing the scrapping of FMR.
Expressing concern that the decision could potentially divide communities and further marginalise Zo children, ZORO affirmed its unwavering stance against the move.
The organisation has called upon Mizo people and individuals from Myanmar to join the peaceful rally in solidarity, urging border villages to actively participate in the protest.
As tensions simmer over the government’s decision, stakeholders await further clarity on the implications and potential repercussions of abolishing the FMR along the India-Myanmar border.
