Aizawl: Mizoram’s Excise and Narcotics Department has registered 87 cases and arrested 112 individuals in connection with drug trafficking in Champhai district, which shares a border with Myanmar, during January to September 2025, officials said.
The figures surpass last year’s statistics. In 2024, 71 cases were filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and 95 people were arrested for drug-related offences in the border district, they added.
An official, citing department data, said that 174 cases were registered under the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act during January–September 2025, compared to 304 cases last year. Alcohol-related arrests also fell to 129 this year from 220 in 2024.
Champhai district excise and narcotics officials seized 12.616 kg of heroin and 87.639 kg of methamphetamine tablets in the first nine months of 2025. Known locally as the “crazy drug,” methamphetamine is banned in India. In comparison, authorities recovered over 8.7 kg of heroin and 86 kg of methamphetamine tablets in the district in 2024.

The operation, aimed at curbing both trafficking and addiction in the state, is scheduled to continue until December.
