Aizawl: Three members of a family lost their lives and one was seriously injured after a massive boulder fell onto their vehicle along the Aizawl–Lengpui Airport Road in Mizoram on Monday.
According to police officials, the accident took place in the Pukpui area when a rock, dislodged by heavy rains, rolled down a hillside and struck the family’s Hyundai car, crushing it instantly.
The victims were identified as Lalrinliana, his wife Lungtiawii, and their daughter Vanlalhruaii. All three died on the spot.
The sole survivor of the tragic event was Lalrinliana’s son, Lallawmzuala, who was behind the wheel at the time.
He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition remains critical, authorities said.
Emergency responders struggled for hours to retrieve the victims’ bodies from the mangled wreckage, which had been completely flattened under the weight of the falling rock.
The stretch of highway where the accident occurred is part of a national route known for its vulnerability to landslides and rockfalls, especially during the monsoon season.
The road connects Aizawl to Lengpui Airport and is a critical link for transportation in the region.
Locals have frequently raised concerns about the danger posed by unstable slopes along this route.
Natural disasters such as landslides and rockfalls are a recurring threat in the hilly terrain of Mizoram, often causing fatalities during the rainy season.
According to data from Mizoram Police, 124 road accidents were reported in the state in 2024 alone, resulting in 112 deaths.

Since 2019, the state has recorded 547 road accidents with a death toll of 467 — about 83 percent of reported incidents ending in fatalities.
Authorities admit the actual numbers could be higher due to underreporting in remote areas.
Officials have once again emphasised the urgent need for improved road safety measures and better slope stabilization efforts to prevent future tragedies along this crucial highway.
