AIZAWL: In a significant crackdown, Assam Rifles have apprehended 16 individuals, including two from Myanmar, in Mizoram, seizing a substantial amount of Indian and Myanmarese currencies from them.
The operation unfolded in south Mizoram’s Siaha district, where personnel from the Assam Rifles intercepted five mini trucks transporting the individuals based on specific intelligence received.
This interception occurred at Zawngling village in Siaha district on Friday, as confirmed by Assam Rifles in an official statement.
Following an exhaustive search, authorities discovered a significant sum of Myanmarese Kyat 7,74,74,500 (equivalent to Rs 30,68,044 in Indian Rupees) along with Indian currency notes valued at Rs. 1 lakh concealed in the vehicles.
Subsequently, both the currency and the accused individuals were handed over to the state police at Tuipang in Siaha district, as per the directives of the Assam Rifles.
The police have launched inquiries into the arrested individuals to uncover the motives behind their possession of such a considerable amount of Indian and Myanmarese currencies.
This incident adds to a series of recent seizures of Myanmarese currency notes in Mizoram.
Earlier, troopers of the Assam Rifles arrested at least three Myanmar nationals among seven individuals in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district for possessing unaccounted cash.
Acting on a tip-off, authorities apprehended the seven individuals who were traveling in a pickup truck near RDS Bungtlang Junction.
During the operation, a total of Rs 2.86 lakh in Indian Rupees and Myanmarese Kyat 47 million (4.7 crore) were seized from their possession, according to an official statement.
The successive seizures underscore the ongoing efforts to combat illegal currency transactions and smuggling activities in Mizoram.
