AIZAWL: A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was taken into custody after a 12-year-old boy died following a collision with his car.
The BSF jawan involved was brought before the court on Monday for further legal proceedings.
The victim, Lalawmpuia, a sixth-standard student of Govt. Durtlang Middle School-II and a resident of Durtlang North locality in Aizawl, was riding his bicycle when the incident occurred on Sunday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, a SUV car, driven by a BSF personnel, struck Lalawmpuia, resulting in severe injuries.
Despite immediate medical attention, the young boy succumbed to his injuries.
CCTV footage revealed that two individuals wearing BSF uniforms emerged from the vehicle following the collision, but swiftly re-entered and fled the scene, despite attempts by onlookers to intervene.
Subsequently, a sizable crowd gathered at the gates of the Border Security Force camp at Durtlang, seeking justice for the tragic loss.
In response to the incident, a case under IPC Section 304(A)/279 was registered at Bawngkawn Police Station, marked as case number 132/24, dated April 21.
Meanwhile, at the Aizawl Police Station, another crowd congregated, insisting that the BSF personnel currently in police custody were not the same individuals depicted in the CCTV footage.
The situation remained tense well into the late hours of Sunday, with local residents demanding clarity and accountability.
As investigations into the incident continue, residents of Aizawl await further developments, seeking justice for Lalawmpuia and his grieving family.
