Youth are both strength and challenge, says Meghalaya CM at Kohima convention

Kohima: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the unique demographic advantage of the northeastern region, emphasising its youthful population compared to the rest of India.

Speaking at the 5th Regional Catholic Youth Convention on Friday, Sangma remarked, “The northeast is not just young; it is younger than the rest of India.”

He underlined the dual nature of this reality, calling it both a strength and a challenge.

“How we nurture our youth will define the future of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and the entire northeast,” he stated.

Focusing on the importance of goal-setting and self-reliance, Sangma encouraged young people to adopt a mindset of entrepreneurship and purpose.

“Without a clear goal, one can work endlessly without meaningful achievements,” he said.

Critiquing the reservation system for fostering complacency, he urged the youth to strive for excellence. “We must compete not because of guaranteed seats but because we can win on merit,” he added.

Sangma advocated for a cultural shift toward self-belief and entrepreneurship.

“Our youth should be job creators rather than waiting for others to start businesses in our states,” he said, citing Meghalaya’s robust startup and entrepreneurship programs as examples.

He also issued a caution about the potential pitfalls of an untapped youth population.

“If left unchannelled, the same youth who can build our region could also become a destructive force. It is up to us to guide them,” he warned.

Concluding his speech, Sangma urged the gathering to prioritise character over success.

“Above all, be good human beings. No amount of power or success can replace humility, respect, and fear of the Lord,” he said.

The convention, hosted by the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement, is organised by the North Eastern Regional Youth Commission in collaboration with the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) North East.
