The Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Archbishop Rev. Leopoldo Girelli is slated to visit Meghalaya’s Tura from February 28 to March 1, 2026. This is the first visit by a Vatican Ambassador to the Garo Hills.
The visit represents the highest level of Vatican representation in Garo Hills. It will be the second major Vatican visit to the Northeast after Pope John Paul II’s visit to Shillong in 1984.
As per reports, the Nuncio will arrive in Guwahati on Saturday morning and then travel to Tura via Mendal, with parishes along the route preparing special welcomes.

On Sunday, a Pontifical Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Shrine Gate, with a large gathering expected. Church services in Tura will be cancelled to allow full participation.
Other engagements on the Nuncio’s schedule also include paying respects at the tombs of former Bishops, attending a reception at Sacred Heart Church in Chandmari, followed by a programme at the Sacred Heart Shrine.
