Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted interim bail to Mahbabul Haque, the chancellor of Meghalaya’s University of Science and Technology (USTM), who was arrested on charges of allegedly promising students assistance in using unfair means during exams to secure high marks.
Justice Mitali Thakuria, while granting bail, imposed several conditions, including Haque’s full cooperation with the investigation, mandatory appearances before the investigating officer as required, and a prohibition on influencing witnesses or individuals connected to the case.
Haque was also required to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 50,000 and an additional surety of the same amount.
The court observed that while Haque had presented a strong case for bail, it would be prudent to review the case diary for further clarity.
The next hearing in the matter, along with the submission of the case diary, has been scheduled for April 9.
