SHILLONG: Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dr. Raj Bhushan Choudhary on Wednesday reviewed various central schemes being implemented in Meghalaya.
The Union Minister, who is on a four-day visit to the state, chaired a crucial review meeting held at the Secretariat.
Minister of the Water Resource Department C Ymbon and other senior officials attended the meeting.
The achievements and challenges regarding implementation of several development schemes, including Jal Jeevan Mission, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, Swachh Bharat Mission, and schemes of the Health & Family Welfare Department, were reviewed during the meeting.
The Union Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress in the implementation of the schemes in Meghalaya and hailed the state departments for their work.
“Meghalaya has already done a great job at the Jal Jeevan Mission implementation,” Choudhary said while lauding the state for its progress in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
“Instead of depending solely on streams, reservoirs can be built to store rainwater, purify it, and use it effectively,” he said while offering suggestions for mitigating the scarcity of water during dry seasons.
He further added that storing rainwater from regions with heavy rainfall could be beneficial for hilly areas, thereby providing a reliable water source during dry periods.
The minister emphasized the Central government’s commitment to providing safe drinking water to every household through the Jal Jeevan Mission.
On the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), Choudhary stressed the importance of education, particularly female literacy.
The union minister acknowledged that despite challenges such as transportation and steep terrain, the state government has performed better in several key indicators.
