SHILLONG: Just two days after President Dropadi Murmu’s visit to Meghalaya and Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah embarked on a crucial three-day visit to the two states, starting on Thursday.
After arriving in Shillong on January 18, the Union Home Minister will inaugurate a cyber-security operational centre of the Assam Rifles on the premises of the Assam Rifles headquarters in Shillong.
Looking ahead, January 19 promises a significant engagement as Shah gears up to lead the 71st Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC).
He is also expected to review the functioning of the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC).
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District in Meghalaya, in an order issued on January 17, has declared the State Convention Centre, Shillong and the headquarters of the Director General of the Assam Rifles (DGAR), Laitkor, Shillong as no flying zones during Shah’s visit on January 18 and 19.
The NEC plenary session, under Shah’s leadership, will not only focus on regional development but also provide a strategic platform to address the longstanding border dispute between Assam and Mizoram.
Earlier on January 5, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, following discussions with Union Home Minister Shah in New Delhi, had stressed on his government’s commitment to resolving disputes at a political level.
On January 20, Shah will visit Assam and will take part in several programmes, including the 61st Raising Day celebrations of the SSB and the passing out parade of Assam Police commandos.
The Union Home Minister will also inaugurate a section of the Brahmaputra Riverfront Beautification initiative in Guwahati’s Panbazar area.
Assam Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika shared that a grand welcome awaits Shah in Assam with approximately 60,000 BJP party members set to attend.
The Union minister will also launch a book named Assam’s Braveheart Lachit Barphukan at Srimanta Sankardev International Auditorium in Guwahati on January 20.
