SHILLONG: Two persons were killed in Ichamati under Shella constituency, East Khasi Hills after a pressure group allegedly held a meeting in the area on Wednesday evening.
Identified as Ishan Singh and Sujit Dutta, the bodies of the deceased were recovered from Ichamati and Dalda, respectively, the police told the press.
Initial reports indicate that both individuals beating to death, with East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, SC Sadhu, acknowledging the presence of stones near the victims’ bodies.
In response, the Deputy Commissioner has promised a thorough magisterial inquiry.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), Rituraj Ravi, informed a regional web portal that a Special Operation Team, in conjunction with the Crime Scene Unit, has been deployed to assist Shella Police in upholding law and order in the vicinity.
While details regarding the nature of the assembly remain undisclosed by authorities, emerging reports suggest it was a protest orchestrated by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Meanwhile, the KSU has not issued any formal response.
Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the incident, considering all possible angles, including the involvement of miscreants.
The rationale behind staging an anti-CAA protest in Ichamati, a scheduled area beyond the CAA’s jurisdiction, remains unclear, adding another layer of complexity to incident.
