Shillong: A special court in Meghalaya has sentenced two men to six years of rigorous imprisonment for drug trafficking, while another accused was awarded a seven-year jail term in a separate rape case, officials said on Wednesday.
The East Khasi Hills Special Judge (NDPS) court on October 27 convicted Marvinson Jyrwa and Skhem Kupar Massar under Sections 21(b) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, along with Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act, for supplying narcotic substances to minors.
Both convicts were handed six years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 60,000 each.
The court described the offence as “deeply aggravating,” noting that the accused not only possessed and distributed drugs but deliberately targeted children.
Public Prosecutor S.S. Das represented the state in the case.
In a separate ruling, the court of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), Shillong, convicted Bijoy Hajong of rape and sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 1 lakh.
The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to grant compensation to the survivor under the Victim Compensation Scheme.
The twin verdicts reflect Meghalaya’s growing judicial and law enforcement push against narcotics trafficking and crimes involving women and children — two issues that authorities say pose serious social and moral challenges in the state.
