Shillong: Police in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district on Monday arrested two Bangladeshi nationals for entering Indian territory without valid travel documents, officials said.
The arrested persons were identified as Monirul Biswas and Lovely Khatun, residents of Bhombag village in Narail district of Bangladesh’s Khulna division.
They were intercepted around 8.30 pm during routine night patrolling when a police team from Dawki police station stopped a vehicle in the area.
The vehicle’s driver, Pynshaibha Khaii of Wahsarang village in East Jaintia Hills district, was also taken into custody on suspicion of facilitating their illegal entry into India and their onward movement from Dawki, police said.
Superintendent of Police Jagpal Dhanoa Singh said the arrests were made during routine patrol operations.
“Our team intercepted the vehicle during night patrolling and found two Bangladeshi nationals without valid travel documents. The driver is suspected to have assisted their illegal entry and movement. All three have been arrested and further investigation is underway,” he said.
A case has been registered at Dawki police station under relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
The accused will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Amlarem, police added.
