Shillong: A tree plantation drive was conducted at the premises of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building in Mawdiangdiang on Tuesday, bringing together key state leaders in a symbolic gesture of environmental responsibility.
The initiative, organised jointly by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and the Forest Department, saw the participation of Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijaya Shankar, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Speaker Timothy D. Shira, and several legislators.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister underlined the urgency of climate action, stating that the effects of climate change are now visible across the globe.
“This programme is more than just planting trees—it reflects our shared commitment as legislators, beyond political lines, to address the global challenges we face,” he said.
Sangma urged fellow lawmakers to revisit and care for the trees they planted, making the exercise more meaningful than a one-day gesture.
He also inspected the progress of the ongoing construction of the new Assembly building.

Governor Vijaya Shankar, who also addressed the gathering, stressed the need to prioritise native and medicinal plant species in afforestation efforts.
Highlighting the ecological risks of monoculture, he called for conservation strategies that preserve Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity, particularly its endangered medicinal plants.
The event served as a platform to reinforce Meghalaya’s commitment to sustainability and collective responsibility amid growing environmental concerns.
