RESUBELPARA: In line with a series of voters’ awareness programmes held across the state, a “Dul Doka” event took place at Dekachang Market in Resubelpara, North Garo Hills, on Tuesday.
The programme was organised by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Meghalaya as part of the Systematic Voters Education & Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign in collaboration with the District Administration, North Garo Hills, and A.chik Theatre Tura.
The event revived an ancient practice of beating the “Dul” (drum) to gather public attention for disseminating important announcements.
Artists called out to the people, especially eligible voters, to cast their votes in the upcoming General Election to the Lok Sabha 2024 on April 19.
Leena Daring, Additional Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills, addressed the gathering as the chief guest, commending the CEO of Meghalaya for organising the campaign using traditional methods to inform the public about the importance of elections.
She informed the audience about election-related activities in the district, such as home-voting facilities for individuals aged 85 and above and those with disabilities.
She urged all eligible voters to fulfil their responsibility towards the country by exercising their franchise on election day.
Daring also announced that the first male and female voters on polling day would be honoured with tree saplings to be planted at their respective polling stations, as part of an initiative to mitigate the impact of climate change.
Assistant Commissioner Liam Tesat Momin highlighted the significance of ethical voting in his speech and urged all voters to exercise their voting rights responsibly.
District SVEEP Icon A’we Pedallers representative Changrik Sangma and others also highlighted the importance of voting to the gathering.
As part of the programme, footballs were distributed to various football clubs in the district as well as the general public.
