AMPATI: Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills, Hema Nayak, inaugurated the Stop Diarrhoea Campaign on Friday, coinciding with the commemoration of World Population Day.
The event was held at the Dinangpara SSA School playground, drawing attention to crucial health issues in the region.
Organised by the District Health Society, the event aimed at addressing the high child mortality rates and resistance to health services in Dinangpara and surrounding villages.
In her address, Deputy Commissioner Nayak highlighted the critical importance of child spacing and family planning services available at various health facilities.
She highlighted the alarming prevalence of diarrhoeal deaths among children and stressed on the need for preventive measures and timely referrals to health facilities for proper treatment.
Nayak also addressed crucial issues related to immunisation and nutrition, urging parents to utilise locally available nutritious foods.
District School Education Officer in-charge, Tapos Marak, also spoke at the event, underscoring the role of education in improving health outcomes.
Additionally, District Maternal and Child Health Officer Dr. Lydia Marak and I/c District Malaria Officer provided insights on the Stop Diarrhoea programme, World Population Day, and strategies for combating malaria, dengue, and Japanese encephalitis.
The event saw participation from various departments, including the ICDS Department, self-help groups, and village health council (VHC) members.
Dr. Samson Sangma, District Immunisation Officer, concluded the programme on a hopeful note, expressing the District Health Society’s commitment to the well-being of the villages.
A free health check-up camp was also conducted, benefiting nearly 200 residents.
Following the campaign launch, a VHC meeting focused on infant mortality and maternal care, where members shared their challenges in accessing health services.
The health department pledged to address these challenges, reaffirming their dedication to improving health outcomes in the region.
The launch of the World Population Day and Stop Diarrhoea Campaign marks a significant step towards enhancing public health and awareness in South West Garo Hills.
