SHILLONG: A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Meghalaya and parts of the Northeast on the evening of August 14. The tremors were felt across all districts of Meghalaya and in parts of Assam and West Bengal.
The National Center for Seismology stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the southeast of Cherrapunjee. The earthquake occurred at 8.19 pm and its depth was 16 km, the centre informed.
“Earthquake of Magnitude:5.4, Occurred on 14-08-2023, 20:19:47 IST, Lat: 25.02 & Long: 92.13, Depth: 16 Km ,Location: 49km SE of Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya,” posted the centre on a popular micro-blogging website.
There have been no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
In 2023, several earthquakes have been reported from the state. In February, a jolt of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter Scale was recorded in East Khasi Hills and a month prior to that an earthquake of magnitude 3.2 had Nongpoh in the same district as its epicenter.
