Meghalaya MP flags truck parking hazards; authorities enforce NH-6 no-parking rule

Shillong: The Ri-Bhoi district administration has imposed a strict no-parking rule along the Byrnihat–Jorabat stretch of National Highway 6 following a written complaint from Meghalaya MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon highlighting the dangers of unauthorized truck parking on the busy route.

In his letter via email to Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on September 18, Syngkon drew attention to the persistent problem of trucks being parked along the highway, particularly between 14th Mile and Jorabat, which he said had led to severe congestion, hindered traffic movement, and increased the risk of accidents.

“The two-lane highway has effectively been reduced to a single lane because of haphazard truck parking, creating long traffic delays and serious hazards, especially during poor weather or low visibility,” the MP noted.

He also pointed out that since NH-6 serves as a key transport corridor for the Northeast, the disruption has affected vital supply chains and movement of essential services.

Syngkon urged the district authorities to identify the reasons compelling truckers to park along the highway, such as the lack of designated parking areas or delays in loading and unloading.

He also called for coordinated enforcement involving the police and transport departments, and long-term engagement with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to develop proper truck lay-bys in the district.

Acting on the MP’s letter, DC Abhilash Baranwal directed the Ri-Bhoi police to enforce a complete ban on roadside parking between Byrnihat and Jorabat to ensure road safety and prevent accidents.

Superintendent of Police V.S. Rathore said that all vehicles, especially heavy trucks, are now prohibited from parking along the stretch and warned that violators would face strict penalties under the law.

He further instructed dhaba and hotel owners not to allow vehicles to stop or park near their establishments, cautioning that repeated violations could invite fines or even temporary closure orders under magisterial powers.

Rathore said the police have intensified enforcement drives along NH-6, conducting checks against illegal parking, speeding, and non-compliance with safety norms such as wearing helmets and seatbelts.

“Since stricter measures were introduced, the number of accidents has already declined. We are determined to maintain discipline on this highway and prevent further loss of life,” he added.
