SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Thursday, laid the Foundation Stone for the Revamp, Redesign, and Refurbishing of the State Central Library complex in Shillong, at a function held at U Soso Tham Auditorium in the presence of Minister of Arts & Culture, Paul Lyngdoh.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma mentioned that plans for constructing a new structure for the Soso Tham auditorium were hindered by COVID a few years ago.
“However, despite this setback, efforts have been made to rejuvenate the auditorium and the complex, which had long awaited renovation and improvement,” he added.
Chief Minister Sangma stressed that the new infrastructure will accommodate modern facilities, transforming the library with state-of-the-art amenities.
“The government aims to refurbish the entire State Library Complex, including the creation of a cineplex and space for performing arts and drama,” he said.
Sangma assured funding for other projects within the State Library complex, envisioning it as a hub where talented youth can converge, share ideas, and showcase their talents to the world.
Under CM Elevate, the government plans to promote 30 movie theatres throughout the state to boost art, culture, movies, and languages of the state, providing a platform for local filmmakers to showcase their works.
Celebrating March 6 as the first anniversary of MDA 2.0 government and the sixth anniversary of MDA government, Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the government’s commitment to growth and development, striving to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Meghalaya.
Art and Culture Minister Lyngdoh expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his vision and mission to drive growth and development in the state.
He thanked the National Library Board for allocating Rs 2.33 crores for refurbishing and upgrading facilities in the State Library Complex.
Lyngdoh highlighted the need to boost the local film industry and revive Shillong’s rich legacy of theatre and plays.
He suggested incorporating entertainment, drama, and cinema activities into the State Central Library’s offerings, alongside sightseeing and trekking activities for tourists during the day.
Cultural performances showcased the musical talents of the state, adding to the significance of the occasion.
