Guwahati: SpiceJet has launched a paperless boarding system at Shillong Airport, marking a move towards faster check-ins and greener air travel.

The budget carrier said the initiative will soon be extended to other domestic airports to enhance passenger convenience and reduce environmental impact.

Passengers checking in at airport counters will now receive their boarding passes directly on WhatsApp, eliminating the need for printed copies.

According to the airline, this feature not only speeds up the check-in process but also cuts paper consumption, aligning with its sustainability goals.

“This initiative significantly reduces wait times and supports eco-friendly travel by lowering paper usage. It reflects SpiceJet’s broader commitment to digital innovation and sustainability,” the airline said in a statement.

SpiceJet claimed this is the first time any Indian airline has introduced WhatsApp-based boarding passes for passengers checking in at airport counters.

The carrier highlighted that despite the availability of web check-in and Digi Yatra services, over nine million boarding passes were printed at Indian airports in June 2025 alone—resulting in nearly six tonnes of carbon emissions.

“Our new process aims to eliminate this avoidable carbon footprint,” the company noted.

Chief Strategy Officer G P Gupta said the initiative demonstrates SpiceJet’s dual focus on enhancing passenger experience and reducing environmental impact.

“The introduction of paperless boarding at Shillong Airport is a major step in that direction. We look forward to rolling out this convenience at more airports soon,” he added.
