Ampati: South West Garo Hills (SWGH) celebrated Meghalaya Statehood Day with immense zeal and enthusiasm in Ampati, reaffirming the district’s unwavering commitment to progress, unity, and peace.
The event was marked by a host of activities, including an official ceremony, a video presentation, patriotic songs performed by officers and employees, a tree plantation drive, and the distribution of prizes to winners of the Meghalaya Day Run.
To culminate the celebrations, government buildings and institutions across the district were illuminated in a beautiful display.
In her keynote address, Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills emphasised the district’s rich cultural heritage and the peaceful coexistence of its diverse communities.
She described the people of Meghalaya as the state’s true treasure, highlighting their role as the driving force behind the region’s progress.
“Our state is a treasure trove of natural wonders, but Meghalaya’s true wealth lies in its people. SWGH has made significant strides across sectors thanks to the collective efforts of all line departments,” the deputy commissioner remarked.
She outlined several key achievements, including improvements in the health and education sectors despite facing challenges.
Special mention was made of the Civil Hospital in Ampati and other healthcare facilities that have been crucial in providing essential services.
The DC called for continued efforts to improve medical care, particularly in rural areas.
On the agriculture front, the Deputy Commissioner praised the work of the Agriculture and Horticulture departments for their efforts to boost production and improve the livelihoods of residents.
She highlighted the potential of Ampati to become the “rice bowl of Meghalaya” owing to its fertile soil and encouraged the expansion of agriculture and horticulture sectors.
Furthermore, she commended the Fisheries Department for transforming SWGH into a surplus district in fish production through sustainable practices.

The Deputy Commissioner proudly pointed out that SWGH ranked first among districts in the state for progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators.
The day’s celebrations also featured the Meghalaya Day Run, organised by the District Sports Office, which saw enthusiastic participation.
In the Men’s Category, Kanen M. Sangma of Bongoara Village claimed first place and in the Women’s Category, Ringsechimik G. Sangma of Chegitchakgre Village finished first.
