SHILLONG: A round trip between Shillong’s Police Bazaar and Umroi Airport on a five-seater will cost a tourist vehicle Rs 1,386 from now on.
According to the updated tariff, tourist vehicles accommodating 4 to 5 passengers will be charged Rs 21 per km.
This translates to Rs. 1,386 for the round-trip of 66 km between the Airport and Police Bazaar.
Announcing the official fare rates, the transport department has directed all regional transport authorities (RTAs) to enforce the order with immediate effect.
“The fare for tourist vehicles between Shillong and Umroi Airport shall be fixed as follows with immediate effect and until further orders,” read a notification issued by Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya Sanjay Goayal, on May 3.
For larger vehicles capable of seating 7 – 8 passengers, the fare has been fixed at Rs. 25 per kilometer. Hence, the round trip between Airport and Police Bazaar for these vehicles will amount to Rs. 1,600.
The move comes amidst increased activity at Umroi Airport, with a surge in passenger footfall reported in recent times.
In March, reports of talks between Meghalaya government and Airports Authority of India (AAI) over of expansion plans had made news.
Post a meeting with AAI, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh had informed that the government is evaluating the feasibility of expanding the existing infrastructure to meet the rising number of passengers in the state.
Enhancing connectivity further, a new road project is underway to link the Mawlai Bypass directly with Umroi, bypassing the need to cross the Umiam bridge.
The road will pass through Umsaw Mawjynrong, Umjathang in Mawlai, and Madan Nonglakhiat in Umroi, facilitating smoother travel between the two destinations.
