SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has unveiled ambitious plans for Shillong, aiming to decongest and beautify the city.
Accompanied by officials from key departments including Public Works, Urban Affairs, Forest, and Environment, the Chief Minister went on an inspection tour spanning various sites across the city on Saturday.
Among the locations surveyed were the PWD office, Phan Nonglait Park, Brightwell Bungalow at Barik Point, Anjali Point, and Polo.
“The government’s vision encompasses a holistic facelift for Shillong through beautification and decongestion,” Chief Minister Sangma told a local news portal.
He highlighted plans to utilise approximately 25 acres of identified land for a range of infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the city’s visual appeal and providing residents with ample public spaces.
Proposed developments include the creation of new walkways, green parks, recreational areas, and cultural centres showcasing Meghalaya’s rich heritage.
At Barik Point, an iconic structure, along with the installation of a National Flag visible from various parts of the city, is set to symbolise unity and pride.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister detailed plans for the creation of public utilities such as restaurants, parking spaces, and other amenities catering to the needs of both locals and visitors.
“The project will kick off with the relocation of existing offices from Barik Point in July, followed by new construction starting in September. This phased approach ensures minimal disruption as we systematically upgrade infrastructure,” he affirmed.
Addressing concerns about environmental conservation, Sangma assured that greenery would be preserved during development.
“Utmost care will be taken not to disturb the existing greenery while implementing new infrastructure,” he pledged.
In a bid to tackle traffic congestion, the initiative includes the creation of additional parking spaces at strategic locations, including multi-level car parking facilities.
“By reducing vehicles parked on roads, we aim to ease traffic flow. Additionally, a new road via NEFA Secretariat to the military hospital will be constructed to alleviate congestion at Anjali Point,” Sangma explained.
During the inspection, Sangma directed the Forest and Environment Department to relocate animals from Phan Nonglait Park to the newly constructed State Zoo in Ri-Bhoi district.
He also reviewed progress on the integrated market construction at Polo.
With these transformative initiatives, Shillong is poised for a significant overhaul, promising residents and visitors a rejuvenated urban landscape and improved quality of life.
