Shillong: In a major step toward environmental rejuvenation, the Green-Tech Foundation launched the Shillong Clean & Green Mission on Saturday.
This wide-ranging initiative aims to transform the capital of Meghalaya into a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city, with a long-term vision set for 2035.
The mission comes in response to growing concerns about the city’s deteriorating environmental conditions.
Shillong, once celebrated for its natural beauty, was ranked among the dirtiest cities in India in 2020.
The new campaign, spearheaded by Green-Tech Foundation, is designed to reverse that image through sustained, community-driven efforts.
As part of the initiative, large-scale cleaning exercises will be conducted on a regular basis—weekly, monthly, and annually—with specific milestones set for the next decade.
These drives are intended not only to beautify the city but to instill a routine of cleanliness that becomes second nature to residents.
Beyond physical cleaning, the mission places strong emphasis on building civic responsibility and promoting “green ethics.”
Educational and awareness programmes will be organised to foster a sense of accountability and environmental stewardship among Shillong’s citizens.
A significant part of the campaign focuses on sensitisation and education.
The Foundation plans to engage the public through awareness drives and educational campaigns that highlight the importance of cleanliness and environmental conservation.
Citizens will be encouraged to adopt sustainable practices and embrace environmentally conscious behaviours in their daily lives.
The mission also promotes a shift to eco-sensible products, discouraging the use of harmful plastics and urging the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives.
By spotlighting the negative effects of plastic pollution, organisers hope to change consumption habits across the city.
The Green-Tech Foundation is mobilizing a diverse range of stakeholders for the campaign.
Partnerships have been forged with drivers’ associations to foster responsible transport practices, and with educational institutions to involve students in eco-friendly initiatives from a young age.
Government agencies and local authorities are also part of the collaborative network, providing institutional support and resources necessary for implementation.

In addition, community stakeholders are being brought on board to ensure local ownership and active participation.
By making residents key players in the mission, the Foundation aims to create a culture of environmental responsibility that extends beyond official programs.
Describing the initiative as a “call to action,” Green-Tech Foundation emphasized the need for collective effort.
“Together, we can make a difference and create a better future for Shillong,” a spokesperson said.
