SHILLONG: In a bid to address the deteriorating condition of National Highway 6 (NH-6), Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon met with Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday.
Syngkon reportedly submitted a letter highlighting the urgent need for restoration of NH-6, particularly the section passing through the East Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya.
Syngkon highlighted that the road condition, especially from Jowai to Ratacherra, has become a significant concern.
“Travellers endure great ordeals due to the deplorable state of the road, which worsens during the monsoon seasons, often leaving people stranded for days,” Syngkon was quoted as saying by a local news website.
NH-6 is a vital artery connecting the states of Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, and Mizoram.

The persistent issue has led to severe economic losses and even loss of lives, affecting citizens across the four states, he reiterated.
Syngkon urged Minister Gadkari to intervene and implement immediate measures to alleviate the hardships faced by the residents.
NH-6 links key cities and towns such as Jorabat, Shillong, Jowai, Silchar, Aizawl, Agartala, and extends to the India-Myanmar border, making its restoration crucial for regional connectivity and economic stability.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya, like the rest of Northeast, has been experiencing severe rainfall over the past few days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Upper Shillong, the state saw a 25% increase in rainfall in June.
Continuous downpours on June 30 and July 1 have caused significant damage in various parts of the state.
The persistent cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, coupled with a trough from west Assam to north Odisha, has worsened the situation.
As heavy rainfall is expected to continue, authorities and residents remain on high alert, addressing the damages and preparing for potential further disruptions.
