SHILLONG: In a bid to enhance spiritual and pastoral care, the Shillong Archdiocese announced the establishment of five new Parishes, emerging from the amalgamation of two existing ones, namely Nongthymmai and Mawlai.
The decision was reached during a crucial meeting convened by the Shillong Archdiocese, bringing together Council members, Parish Priests from Mawlai and Nongthymmai, as well as lay leaders, on January 9.
The newly formed Parishes are Mawiong and Mawtawar, branching out from Mawlai Parish, and Umpling, Nongrah, and Madanrting, stemming from Nongthymmai Parish.
Shillong Arch Bishop Victor Lyngdoh, while highlighting the significance of this expansion, told the local press, “In our journey towards progress; in our Christian commitment, we realise the need for better spiritual and pastoral care in the whole Archdiocese. We are indebted to all the priests, religious, lay leaders, and the faithful for their selfless service to the Church.”
Archbishop Lyngdoh highlighted that the decision to open new Parishes is in harmony with the necessity for improved pastoral care and aligns with the long-aspired desires of the faithful.
The Parishes would be established in a phased-manner, reflecting a commitment to meet the spiritual needs of the growing Christian community within the Archdiocese.
Addressing all priests, religious, and faithful within the Archdiocese of Shillong through a statement, the Archbishop reiterated the gratitude towards those contributing selflessly to the Church.
He articulated the importance of this expansion as a response to the evolving pastoral requirements and the earnest aspirations of the faithful.
“We are indebted to all the priests, religious, lay leaders, and the faithful for their selfless service to the Church,” the statement read.
