Shillong: Search and rescue operations were continuing on Saturday at an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, where a powerful explosion killed 25 people, police officials said.

The blast occurred on Thursday at a mine located in the Thangsku area of Umsngat village, triggering large-scale rescue efforts involving multiple agencies.

Authorities said several people are still unaccounted for, and teams remain engaged in combing the site for survivors and bodies.

A suo motu FIR has been registered at Khliehriat police station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.

Police confirmed that two persons — Forme Chyrmang (36) of Jalaphet Pordung village and Shamehi War (42) of Sutnga Pohwailong village — have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal coal mining and assured strict action against all those responsible.

He added that the district administration has been directed to intensify enforcement measures and ensure accountability.

Justice (retd) B.P. Katakey, who is overseeing compliance related to mining issues in the state, visited Thangsku and confirmed that illegal mining activities were being carried out on a large scale in the area, officials said.
