Shillong: The 3rd edition of the YAI North East Regatta 2025 officially launched at Umiam Lake in Shillong, marking a vibrant start to one of India’s premier junior sailing competitions.
Organised by the Umiam Sailing Club in collaboration with the UDAY Sailing Foundation, the regatta is being held under the patronage of the Yachting Association of India (YAI) and supported by the International 420 Class Association of India.
The regatta, which runs until May 29, is a key event in the Junior National Ranking calendar.
It not only showcases the country’s emerging sailing talent but also plays a critical role in identifying and grooming potential candidates for the 2026 Asian Games.
Delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony, Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, AVSM, Vice President of YAI, applauded the rising profile of sailing in the Northeast.
“The focus on creating a professional yet sailor-friendly environment here has set a benchmark for regional regattas in India. It’s this level of detail and vision that transforms good events into exceptional ones,” he said, commending the Umiam Sailing Club for fielding 13 sailors — the third-largest contingent this year.
Dr Vijay Kumar D., IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Tourism and Chairman of Umiam Sailing Club, emphasised the state’s vision of sustainable tourism integrated with economic development.
He highlighted plans to make Umiam Lake a permanent hub for water sports, including sailing and rowing, particularly in the lead-up to Meghalaya hosting the National Games in 2027.
“We have earmarked a permanent space for both rowing and sailing facilities to ensure long-term sporting infrastructure,” he stated.
The event is being officiated at par with global standards, featuring international judges, certified race officers, and a national measurer — underscoring the organisers’ commitment to professionalism and fairness.
This year, 79 sailors representing nine sailing clubs from across India are competing in the regatta, including 25 women and nine first-time participants, reflecting the growing inclusivity within the sport.
The competition spans five categories across 11 classes, promising a dynamic and action-packed race calendar.
