Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday inaugurated the newly built Mount Hermon English School building at Mebitpara near Dalu, calling it an important step toward improving education and overall development in the area.
Gambegre MLA Dr Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma attended the programme as the Guest of Honour.
The school building was constructed with Rs. 5.96 lakh sanctioned under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) – NGO category for 2024–25, routed through the Dalu C&RD Block.
Sangma described the inauguration as a “special moment,” noting that it was the first time his and his wife’s names appeared together on an inaugural plaque.
He said the project marked the beginning of efforts to fulfil development commitments made to the people of the region.
Emphasising the importance of holistic education, the Chief Minister said the new building would strengthen learning opportunities for children in Mebitpara and neighbouring villages.
During his address, Sangma also highlighted the ongoing work on the 28-km Ampati–Purakhasia road, outlining the funding and progress for each stretch.
He said Rs. 7.46 crore had been sanctioned for the 0–4 km segment under the state scheme, with 50% work completed; Rs. 13.78 crore under PMGSY for the 5–20 km stretch, where 15% work is done; and Rs. 66 crore in World Bank funding for the final 21–28 km portion. He added that he is personally monitoring the project.
Sangma said education remains a priority sector for the government, with reforms underway to improve outcomes for students, teachers and stakeholders.
He also urged residents to complete registrations under the updated FOCUS+ programme.
