Shillong: The Rising Sun Water Fest-2022 was inaugurated on Thursday amidst the pristine surroundings of Umiam Lake in Meghalaya.
The maiden Regatta is being conducted from November 3 to 5, and is being steered under the aegis of Indian Army’s Kolkata based Headquarters Eastern Command. Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the Rising Sun Water Fest 2022.
A large gathering of viewers was delighted to witness the cultural events, fly-past by Microlight aircraft and the beautiful display of rowing and sailing races.
Sangma thanked all the participants, team managers and organisers for coming together and putting up a brilliant display with clockwork precision.
Well known artists, including Priyanka Bharali, Joana Jamang, local Garo and Jaintia dances added more colour to the inaugural ceremony.
Indian Idol famed Naib Subedaar Pawan also left the audience spellbound with his melodious voice.
A total of 22 clubs (both males and females) are participating in Rowing and Sailing disciplines from across the country. Semi-finals and finals would be conducted over the coming two days.
The Rising Sun Water Fest-2022 is aimed at promoting the spirit of rowing and sailing among the youth of Meghalaya and to ensure that more champions emerge from the state.
The Indian Army has taken the initiative in line with the “Khelo India” to promote water sports and laid the foundation for developing the naturally available water body into a state of the art venue for conduct of events in future.
