Shillong: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a disturbing video showing alleged mishandling of a woman’s body by police personnel in East Garo Hills, and has asked for a detailed report from the district’s Superintendent of Police.

The incident in question involves the recent daylight murder of a young woman, who was brutally attacked and killed.

A video from the scene, which has since gone viral, shows police transporting the body in an undignified manner—exposed and uncovered—raising serious questions about the sensitivity and protocols followed during such situations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the MHRC noted that the act displayed a lack of basic respect for the deceased and appeared to be a violation of human dignity.

The Commission has also flagged concerns over the role of the One Stop Centre (OSC) in Williamnagar.

According to a media report, the victim had previously sought help from the OSC, but no timely action was allegedly taken.

Taking this into account, the MHRC has asked the Director of Social Welfare to submit a report, accompanied by the relevant press clipping, detailing the sequence of events and the response from the centre.

The Commission’s notice underscores the need for accountability and sensitivity in handling cases involving victims of violence, especially women, both during and after such incidents.
