SHILLONG: The Ri Bhoi Police seized 4750 gm of “pure grade” marijuana worth Rs 20 crore from a truck on Sunday night in Meghalaya.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, while commending the seizure, took to the microblogging website on Monday to praise the remarkable efforts of the Ri-Bhoi District Police.
“Delighted to share the phenomenal job by the @ribhoipolice! They’ve unearthed a hidden stash… This goes without saying that this huge bust has prevented a tidal wave of harm, protecting countless lives and communities from the destructive grip of drugs…” he wrote.
Sangma further highlighted that the fight against the drug menace isn’t over. “Let’s join hands, report any suspicious activity, and make Meghalaya a safer, healthier state for all!” he added in the post.
In response to Chief Minister Sangma, Director General of Police (DGP) Meghalaya, LR Bishnoi, thanked the Chief Minister and his government for their “guidance and unflinching support”.
The Meghalaya police have made significant progress in their ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of narcotics, drugs, and psychotropic substances, boasting seizures valued at an astounding Rs 223 crore from 2019 to September 6, 2023.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong disclosed this revelation while responding to a zero-hour notice initiated by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem during the Assembly session in September 2023.
Underlining the government’s proactive approach to addressing drug-related offenses, the Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the establishment of the advisory board on June 30, 2023.
This strategic move, he noted, is in accordance with Section 9 of the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS), 1988.
The board has been empowered to oversee the detention of habitual drug traffickers in accordance with the provisions of the Act.
