Guwahati: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, forecasting extreme heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next two days.
The alert, effective Wednesday and Thursday, signals the need for immediate action to ensure public safety. An orange alert, indicating a preparedness level, has been announced for Friday.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), isolated regions in both states are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could exacerbate waterlogging, disrupt traffic, and heighten the risk of localised landslides.
Residents and authorities in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant.
Emergency response systems have been activated, and local authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation. The ASDMA has called on citizens to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
Residents in low-lying areas and those near hillsides have been urged to stay alert for signs of flooding or landslides and to stock up on essential items, including medicines and candles.
People living in landslide-prone zones are advised to move to safer shelters or designated relief camps for the next three days.
Commuters and travelers have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly, while ASDMA continues to provide regular updates for public awareness.
Citizens are also encouraged to follow weather advisories and official communications to stay safe during the adverse weather spell.
The current weather system has raised concerns due to recent instances of flooding, landslides, and waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall.
The red alert emphasises the need for coordinated action to mitigate risks and protect lives.
