Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Monday said that the Meghalaya government is actively engaging with stakeholders to explore the long-pending proposal for railway connectivity in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, even as discussions on expanding air connectivity across the state continue.
On the aviation front, Dhar informed that the expansion work at Umroi Airport is progressing well and is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.
Once ready, the upgraded airport will be able to handle larger aircraft and increased passenger movement.
The government, he added, has asked the executing agency to expedite work to ensure timely completion.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the state has invited the Airports Authority of India for a joint inspection of Baljek Airport in Tura to identify the land required for expansion.
Despite being inaugurated years ago, the airport remains non-operational, with no regular flight services.
Turning to the railways, Dhar said the government is focusing on dialogue and consensus-building before moving ahead with the proposed railway line in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills — a project that has remained stalled for years amid stiff opposition from local pressure groups.

Currently, Meghalaya has a single railway link connecting Mendipathar in North Garo Hills to Assam.
While there is a push to expand rail connectivity in the Garo Hills, the idea of introducing trains to the Khasi-Jaintia Hills continues to divide opinion.
Supporters argue that a railway network could help lower transportation costs, boost trade, and make the movement of goods more efficient, especially benefiting farmers and small businesses.
Opponents, however, fear that the introduction of railways could lead to large-scale migration into the state and pose risks to its demographic balance and cultural identity.
