Shillong: Protesters in Shillong on Saturday gheraoed the official residence of Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma in protest against the killing of 5 innocent people by Assam Police at Mukroh in West Jaintia hills district.
On Saturday afternoon, several hundred protesters gheraoed the CM’s official bunglow near Polo Bazar in down town Shillong and raised slogans.
Police put up barricades in front of the main gate of the CM’s official residence, and ensured that no one could enter the campus.
The protesters also burnt effigies of union home minister Amit Shah, Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the protest.
The protest was staged by members of the Save Hynniewtrep Mission (SHM). The SHM is a platform of five pressure groups of Meghalaya, fighting for the rights of the Khasi people.
The 5 organisations of SHM are Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), East Jaintia National Council (EJNC), Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM), Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) and the Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP).
Sources said chief minister Conrad K Sangma is yet to return to Shillong from New Delhi.
Sangma had gone to New Delhi to meet union home minister Amit Shah and the members of the National Human Rights Commission demanding investigation by central agencies into the killing of 5 innocent people by Assam Police at Mukroh.
The SHM has been fighting for fulfillment of nine-point charter of demands, including the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) before the Assembly polls.
